Celtic Nyckelharpa

Gavin Pennycook 2010-08-15

专辑简介

The first album ever devoted to traditional Scottish & Irish dance music on the nyckelharpa (Swedish keyed fiddle). Fiddle player Gavin Pennycook has spent the past few years adapting the traditional Celtic fiddle repertoire for the nyckelharpa. The tracks on the CD are a mixture of solo, duo, trio and ensemble pieces, with Gavin joined by Chris Wright on cittern and 12-string guitar, Esther Kuck on bodhran, Rob Truswell on guitar and Richie Werner on djembe. Gavin also adds his own fiddle, octave-strung fiddle, Galician bagpipes and whistle to a few tracks. 'Dynamic yet subtle, with a deep resonance of tone which really lends itself to the airs, bringing a freshness that makes for compulsive listening. Hugely recommended' Gordon Potter, Living Tradition magazine, Scotland 'a master of both Scottish and Irish styles ... an intriguing album and a very successful project' Alex Monaghan, Irish Music Magazine, Ireland 'The nyckelharpa coexists in the highest well-being and behaving in Pennycook's hands, as if it always been in place in this context ... "Pour some nyckelharpa on me" it feels just perfectly natural.' Timo Kangas, Lira magazine, Sweden (via Google Translate!) 'It’s an album of very cool sounds and Pennycook wonders why more people aren’t using the nyckelharpa in Celtic music. A great question!' Sing Out magazine, USA 'one of the most enjoyable all-instrumental CDs I've had the pleasure of encountering over the past year ... a joy from start to finish and I wish it were twice as long, for its 44 minutes just fly by ... the sound is rich, deep and full: gloriously so, and splendidly recorded too ... quite miraculous' David Kidman, NetRhythms
